What is ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 defines worldwide how an organization must be structured in order to achieve the highest level of success in terms of the quality of its products. It therefore represents the reference standard for the creation, implementation, and management of a Quality Management System for any modern company.
This is a strategic choice aimed at increasing production, reducing costs, becoming more competitive in the market, and improving customer loyalty. The main requirement of ISO 9001 concerns the development of a Quality Policy that reflects the intentions of Management. It is intended to provide guidance on product and process quality, explaining what management intends to do with regard to quality. It is defined by taking into account customer requirements and satisfaction, on which quality objectives depend.
Structure of ISO 9001
The standard is divided into ten sections: the first three are introductory, while the last seven, listed below, contain the requirements relating to the Quality Management System:
It addresses the requirements necessary to implement a QMS – Quality Management System (identification of internal and external issues, interested parties and their expectations, definition of the scope of the QMS, and identification of processes and their interaction).
It defines the need to plan the ongoing operation of the QMS through an assessment of risks and opportunities, with the identification of quality improvement objectives and the actions necessary to achieve those objectives.
It defines the management and control of all resources related to the QMS (human resources, infrastructure, work environment) and the requirements relating to competence, awareness, communication, and control of documented information (the documents and records required for the processes).
It defines the requirements relating to planning, the review of product requirements, design, control of external suppliers, the creation and delivery of the product or service, and the control of non-conforming process outputs.
It defines the requirements for monitoring and measuring processes, assessing customer satisfaction, conducting internal audits, and carrying out management reviews of the QMS.
It defines the requirements necessary to improve the QMS over time, namely the assessment of any process non-conformities and the adoption of corrective actions related to processes.
Implementation of improvements derived from performance analysis.
Monitor and measure processes and products to determine the effectiveness of performance and the activities implemented.
Monitor and measure processes and products to determine the effectiveness of performance and the activities put in place.
These sections are based on a
PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act)
The Quality Management System (QMS) is in fact based on process management (each operation is considered as a process with inputs, controls, and desired outputs) and primarily aims at full customer satisfaction and at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of results, in order to increase the chances of success for companies in the market.
